Anxiety and excitement

Fritz Perls, the co-founder of gestalt therapy is known to have said that anxiety is excitement without support.

I find this statement a very grounding idea for what we can do in therapy. As a therapist, I feel honored to be trusted when someone is in pain, anxiety, and inner turmoil. We can walk together towards and into that chaotic feeling that has been created by the lack of support in your life. Together we can face the scary parts of your reality and see the images, ideas, misconceptions, shadows based on past guesswork, for what they really are and what they mean to you. I am there to support you and see if anxiety, panic, anger, and depression can transform into something more manageable. We patiently watch what happens when we add that one crucial element of support. We do not know what the end result will be as it is always very individual, but I think that transforming anxiety into excitement is quite a desirable outcome. With each client I am somewhere along this path.
